A six-layer density column

September 6, 2026

Liquids with different densities will stack on top of each other if you pour them carefully. The trick is to pour slowly down the side of the glass, or over the back of a spoon.

Order, bottom to top

  1. Honey
  2. Corn syrup
  3. Dish soap
  4. Very salty water, coloured blue
  5. Plain water, coloured red
  6. Vegetable oil

Small objects settle at the layer that matches their density: a grape sank to the soap, a cherry tomato floated on the water.
